Shoes of that general design, called "wedgies" or "platform" - were extremely popular among females in the USA during the 1940s and 1950s.

This pair looks like it might have originated in the Philippines... they did a lot of designs using woven leather or grass uppers, with carved wooden lowers.

There must also have been thousands and thousands of varieties of that shoe made in France, Spain (as a take-off on espadrilles), Morocco and the US.

It would have been something the knowing husband or boyfriend would have been sure to get high reward for picking out and sending home to his lady.

General Apathy

I've seen color photos of 'paris under the occupation' showing women in shoes real similar to these. apparently females made up for the lack of leather (or even rubber?) soles with what the euros have always had: STYLE! anyhow great and inteesting score, well done!

Paris fashion September 1944 . . . . . . . .

An interesting photograph, not identical shoes to the ones in the box but a lot happening in this photo, the Eiffel Tower, the lady on the cycle has a Red Cross flag attached to the front of the cycle, a Jeep full of G.I. Joes passing on the left.
