Chris Posted October 10, 2019 Author Share #26 Posted October 10, 2019 This comes with the mentioned document dated 1923, from the French Military Attaché, awarding the Commemorative medal Willis. But, the seller forgot to put the document in the box. So, I will post that in a week or so, when it arrives. However, as promised, here are Willis' AFS medal, Commemorative Service medal, and his great bullion AAS patch.

Croix de Guerre Posted June 21, 2021 Share #31 Posted June 21, 2021 Ask yourself; "What was the significance of the "Rooster Patch"? And why was he awarded the AFS medal when he never served with the American Field Service?

The "Rooster Patch" or the le coq gaulois was adopted by the US Army Ambulance Sections that were on detached service with the French army as opposed to ambulance sections that were integral components of American divisions. Willis was awarded the American Field Service medal even though he did not actually serve in the AFS because he volunteered during the transitional period when the AFS was being taken over by the US Army. American Field Service SSU 8 became USAAS SSU 629.
