Overhead Fire 7.62 MM Ammunition?

Recommended Posts

I recently came across this 7.62mm ammunition can which says "OVERHEAD FIRE". Other than that I am cognizant of the symbols and military designations of types of ammunition and loading materials.None of my other cans loaded for linked 7.62mm NATO has this description. Does anyone know what this refers to? This can was reloaded in 1968, as part of the previous lot number, ammunition plant, and description of contents can be seen under the paint. The can also has features of earlier ammunition can manufacture such as embossed bullet on lid.

I`m not an expert for ammo, but "overhead fire" means in my memory a parcours where you crawled under different things like barbed wire or fences, some metres under fire from guns outside the parcours, fireing high about you. They told us the ammo was selected to avoid accidents.

Here is a reference.

7.62 tracer is red tipped for overhead fire instead of orange. (Standard dark ignition.)

In 30-06 red is bright ignition, orange dark ignition.
