M1917 Helmet with mystery Symbol?

Guys I had this original ww1 1917 helmet for a long time, but i didnt notced that it had that symbol on the side....or it is patina? what do you guys think?

maybe the user painted over the symbol to cover it up and the paint used wasnt an exact match giving it a slight shadow effect

 

if the helmet was used by a different unit they may have tried to cover up the old unit by dabbing a little OD paint over it?
