Frederick M. Barney was born in Dolgeville, New York on April 13, 1863. He was an 1888 graduate of The Albany Medical College, Albany, New York. He entered the Army as a U.S. Volunteer after working for the Red Cross on August 19, 1898. Barney was then sent to Camp Wycoff, Montauk Point, New York where he was Chief Pharmacist. In September he was made Acting Surgeon of U.S. Volunteers and was sent to Porto Rico. He served as a Surgeon in the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, where he was wounded in November of 1899 during an engagement in the Tarlac provenance of the Philippines. Barney also served on the China Relief Expedition of 1900 with the 9th Infantry during the Boxer Rebellion where he was involved in the Battle of Tientsin. The 9th Regiment suffered a ten percent casualty rate in the battle. Barney was also involved in the Battle of Yangcun on the march from Tientsin to Peking. He then served at Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Pacification and on the Army General Staff during World War 1. Barney was a member of the Military Order of the Dragon and the Military Order of the Carabao. Barney was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army on December 11. 1918. Dr. Barney practiced medicine in Dolgeville, New York until his death on August 17, 1937.

This group was part of the Albert Gleim collection. The Order of the Carabao in the group is not numbered to Barney although Barney is listed in the Order of the Carabao book. The Carabao is numbered to Lt. Gen. James Guthrie Harbord. I was told when I bought the group that Gleim acquired the group from a well known medal dealer who sold off the original Barney Carabao. Gleim added this Carabao as a place holder. The group also includes the pocket surgical kit that belonged to Barney. I have also included pages of notes that Gleim wrote about the group.
