I think the engraving on the pair is correct.

Here is what I have from WWII Memorial at DC

https://www.wwiimemorial.com/Registry/plaque_wardept.aspx?honoreeID=1061658

SHOT DOWN FLYING IN A B-24 BOMBER. MEMBER OF THE 712TH BOMBER SQUADRON, 448TH BOMBER GROUP, HEAVY. MISSING IN ACTION; RECEIVED THE AIR MEDAL AND THE PURPLE HEART.

From American Air Museum https://www.americanairmuseum.com

Military | Staff Sergeant | Top Turret Gunner | 448th Bomb Group
Shot down by flak and crashed near Hof Metelen on 6/21/44 in B-24 #4295186 Killed in Action (KIA)

I would imagine with the number of Purple Heart Medals being cranked out from death from June 1944 on, that the engraver missed the period.

If your concerned send them to me and I will be caretaker.

I don't have a problem with the engraving. I wouldn't hesitate owning them if I wanted them for my collection.
