AZPhil Posted August 16, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2019 Hello All, I am hoping I can get assistance with the uniform my uncle is wearing in the pic on the left. I have been given stellar information on the one on the right and I am currently studying that uniform (M1881 helmet) for a future purchase, But while I am finding officers models, I not seeing many enlisted version for the 2nd Cavalry. I will continue my search for that . In the mean time I would like to look for what he is wearing in the pic on the left. Could I get the exact year and model of what cap and uniform he is wearing? I figure I can research/pursue that option while waiting to find my holy grail. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. This pic is circa 1891 from my research and assistance given here. AZPhil Posted August 16, 2019 Author Share #2 Posted August 16, 2019 I would have added this to the above post but my edit function timed out. I also wanted to change "work" uniform to utility. Could I get a recommendation on a reseach publication to study about this uniform? Semper Fi Phil
MattS Posted August 16, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 16, 2019 I'm definitely not an expert on this era, but the cap looks like a M1872 Forage Cap (kepi) which was like the Civil War kepi but not as tall. I thought were phased out prior to 1891 though. US History makes a nice reproduction M1872 if that is what this is. http://www.ushist.com/indian_wars/us_military/uniforms/hats_indian-wars.shtml
MattS Posted August 16, 2019 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2019 As far as uniform, maybe M1883/1884 fatigue blouse? http://www.ushist.com/indian_wars/us_military/uniforms/q-7425_m1874-m1883-m1884-m1887_enlisted_fatigue_blouse.shtml https://www.ccsutlery.com/store/iw-m1883-fatigue-blouse-value.html M1874 belt plate/buckle https://regtqm.com/product/m1874-us-sword-belt-plate/ https://www.ccsutlery.com/store/buckle-2piece-iw.html
MattS Posted August 16, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 16, 2019 I think the shirt is the M1883: https://www.quartermastershop.com/1872_and_on_us_enlisted/m-1883_wool_issue_shirt.html
AZPhil Posted August 16, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted August 16, 2019 Thank you Matt, Do you know of any reference books that I might get? I would like one that can help ID reproductions looking at the prices I found on the Kepi. Semper Fi Phil
BEAST Posted August 16, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 16, 2019 Phil, Great photos! I would recommend More Army Blue https://www.schifferbooks.com/more-army-blue-the-uniform-of-uncle-sams-regulars-1874-1887-1242.html
BEAST Posted August 16, 2019 Share #8 Posted August 16, 2019 This company reproduces the uniforms, but their website is a very good quick reference http://www.ushist.com/indian_wars/us_military/uniforms/q-7430_m1874-m1875-m1879-m1881-m1883_grey_dark-blue_enlisted_issue-campaign_shirt.shtml
MattS Posted August 17, 2019 Share #9 Posted August 17, 2019 Thank you Matt, Do you know of any reference books that I might get? I would like one that can help ID reproductions looking at the prices I found on the Kepi. The one BEAST posted is the only uniform reference book I've ever seen for the Indian War period. Good luck with your quest, I wouldn't know where to begin.
AZPhil Posted August 17, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted August 17, 2019 Thank you Gent's, I appreciate your time and knowledge shared. And thank you Beast for the book recommendation . It also looks like the same author also wrote this one. Hats Off: Head Dress of the U.S. Army 1872-1912 ' I just picked up a copy of A Guide Book to U.S. Army Dress Helmets 1872-1904 Mark Kasal and Don Moore and the above mentioned book was also recommended. Looks like my library is going to grow a little bigger. I might try inter library loan for these to see if they are worth adding. I'm glad you like the pic's Beast as much as I do. Thanks again to all. Semper Fi Phil.

MattS Posted January 14, 2020 Share #14 Posted January 14, 2020 It's a 120 page PDF best viewed on a computer, or I printed it out and put it in a binder.
