What does the cross on this M1881 emblem mean

Hello All,

I saw this M1881 for sale and I have a friend who collects Chaplin helmets, I wanted to know if I should tell him about this one, But I'm not sure what that cross stands for on these helmets, e.g. Medical, Religious???

The helmet does not look correct. As far as the "cross", it is medical, not chaplain. The plate is cavalry, not staff, the shell is not federal, and the spike base is off.

Thank you Woodymyster.

I appreciate the quick and detailed reply. It was a learning experience.

No need to contact my friend on that one.

I want to add one of these types to my collection someday to represent what My GGuncle has in the pic I posted about him.

It seems as if I need to do some serious studying before I even attempt to buy one. Considering I didn't know the difference in the type of helmet you mentioned in your reply.

All I knew was that it was a Cav. plate and the spike looked tilted.

Thanks Again.
