KommandoPost Posted July 30, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 30, 2019 I found these at the same swap meet I find all my other weird US things at. There was nothing else there that looked like it went with them. They both have "AE Prototype" and "Property of Naval Air Warfare Center Patuxent River, MD" on the tags, 2011 production dates, and a hand-written label like I've seen on other modern prototype items. A friend says they look like plate bags for some kind of air crew body armor. Does anyone have any more information about such a system or if it ever made it into service? I can't seem to find anything about a "CMU-37" or "CMU-38" on the internet.

Vest, survival CMU-38(V)1-4/P pilot, copilot type II (aircrew endurance)Special Features: New survival vest and armor to replace the CMU-33/A P/N 3561AS301-2C, PRU-60 and PRU-70 for rotary wing platform to exclude P-3, C-130 and E-2. item on abilityone procurement list and currently manufactured by peckham vocational. Guess the AE on the tag stands for Aircrew Endurance. From what Ive also read, the 37 is a version for flight crew that can move around wearing a gunners belt, and the 38 is for pilots like mentioned above. I think I saw a 37 on display last year from a H-60 crew. Ill look to see if I have a pic of it, I know it wasn't the PRU-70 vest its replacing. mohawkALSE Posted August 1, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 1, 2019 Didn't want to bother ruining the pic and resizing it. Here is a official Navy photo of the AE vests. Id imagine what you have are removable hard plate pockets they tried out before fielding the vest. http://alert5.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/PMA_202_AE_vests1.jpg
