MajorBonacelli Posted July 13, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 13, 2019 Need opinions on these Ranger Scrolls I have. Cant tell if they are Patch King or WWII Manufacture. Both have cheesecloth backing.
gwb123 Posted July 13, 2019 Share #2 Posted July 13, 2019 Please show a photo of the backsides. "Cheesecloth" comes in a lot of varieties. The backside of the patch tells a lot about its origin. Thanks.
Bill Scott Posted July 13, 2019 Share #3 Posted July 13, 2019 Just from what I can see I do not like them. Both the number 1 and 4 look like the skinny patch king style. And as Gil said to confirm shots of the backs are as important as shots of the front of any patch. doyler Posted July 13, 2019 Share #5 Posted July 13, 2019 Will add the sizing material/cheese cloth on the backs often is a thicker or more dense weave than most WW2 made contracted examples.I bought several in the 70s from surplus vendor who had the patch king type patches. He offered the scrolls numbered from 1-9.All the same construction. This said I have seen a few worn as right shoulder patches years after the war by vets.I may still have an ike here from the VFW with a 5th worn on the right sleeve. phillock Posted July 13, 2019 Share #6 Posted July 13, 2019 Hi Major Bonacelli To help you out, there is a search function top right hand corner, punch in ranger scrolls (This forum) and it come's up with 4 pages and a wealth of info on authentic and reproduction WWII era scrolls. Also the Keller's Emblems of Honor series - Ranger is highly recommended packed full of authentic patches, scrolls and information. ThomasTrain Posted July 30, 2019 Share #8 Posted July 30, 2019 Im not a fan of them either, the large amount of felt material and skinny uniform lettering would make me stay away. For original WWII era scrolls I would recommend looking for wool or wool/felt, the thicker traditional Us made lettering (as seen below), slimmer cut base material, and overall lack of stiffness. The emblems of honor book on ranger scrolls is a major help as is this forum. Hope this helps.
