Quick helmet display - 100 Years of US Army Helmets

Recommended Posts

I set this up for the 4th at the local fairgrounds with some help from fellow collectors. My idea was to have a top (coat, shirt, etc.) and helmet from 1918-2018 on display. I ended up with 11 tops and 16 helmets. I displayed some of them upside-down to show the evolution of the suspension from leather to cotton to pads in the ACH. From one corner around counter-clockwise was 100 years. I had to use some repros as this was an open display and putting an original WW2 paratrooper helmet or uniform out seemed like an unnecessary risk.

I ended up with WW1 top, M1917, M1917A1, WW2 M-1937 shirt, M1, M1942 jump jacket (repro), M2 (repro), HBT top, M1 with burlap cover, OG fatigue shirt, M1 w/OD cover, M1 w/Mitchell cover-fall side out, Vietnam slant pocket shirt, M1 Mitchell cover, M1 w/ERDL cover, BDU coat, M1 Woodland, MMH II, 6-color DBDU top, Kevlar w/6-color cover, Kevlar with winter white cover, DCU top, Kevlar w/DCU cover, ACU top, MICH w/ACU cover, OCP top, ACH w/OCP cover.

Nice display; simple and effective which is a good thing. Sometimes displays get too complicated for the general public to really understand, your display appears to be very concise and focused.

Nice display! How do you keep the public from mauling everything with their grubby fingers?

Walmart sells a black fine netting that works well, learned 25 some years ago to cover displays. Little respect for property, then there were the ones that thought it was Government Property.

Thanks for the comments! It was quick to set up and take down which was nice as it had to be removed on the 4th. The helmet 'stands' are nothing more than upside-down bottle tops (Simply Orange to be exact) covered with a piece of black cloth. M1s tend to sit nicely in the cap without rolling around the table.

You just lay the netting over the display? Good idea, thanks!
