NFReg74 Posted July 9, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2019 I recently acquired the helmet and it comes with leather chinstrap. The green buckle is made of brass and both rivets are United Carr and DOT. Does this chinstrap seem to be a legit wartime or a late war/post war make? Thanks.

ken88 Posted July 9, 2019 Share #4 Posted July 9, 2019 it's a late war chin strap. the Dot rivet is really interesting. Looks like a collector painted the buckle green to make it look like an earlier strap. Only early steel buckles were painted green as far as I know, the Dot rivet would date it about 1945. They made another change to black painted steel post war and United Carr rivets were no longer used. Yours is a nice transitional example.

cerick1450 Posted July 9, 2019 Share #6 Posted July 9, 2019 I Have seen green painted brass buckles before. I think they were very late war, IMO.
cerick1450 Posted July 9, 2019 Share #7 Posted July 9, 2019 Is there an anchor mark on the inside of the flap of the buckle?
