Mesh or Gauze backing tend to be seen on most twill shoulder patches, and occasionally on Wool Chevrons and Service Stripes Overseas Bars too in WWII. Other times it will be seen as well, mostly in the 60s, occasionally on the U.S. made subdued shoulder patches and enlistedmen sleeve rank insignia embroidered on od twill or cotton sateen.
