Navy veteran assault on Cherbourg Peninsula

Uniform belonging to Fred Wenger Jr.

Fred enlisted in the navy on April 13, 1943 and served until April 13, 1946.

75 years ago today, he participated in the assault on Cherbourg Peninsula of France aboard LST 315. In November the ship was decommissioned and transferred to British Naval Service.

Fred then was transferred to the pacific and attached to the 1st Marine Division a few months later. On April 1st he participated in actions against the Japanese on Okinawa. He was honorably discharged as a Pharmacist mate 1st class in 1946.

 

This is his uniform from his time attached to the marines. Current location of his Navy uniform is unknown.
