mortarman Posted June 1, 2019 Share #1 Posted June 1, 2019 Can anyone identify which West Virginia National Guard unit would have worn this disk?. I am familiar with the 150th and 201st infantry but have never been able to identify a 104th WVa unit.
mortarman Posted September 7, 2019 Author Share #2 Posted September 7, 2019 I finally found out what unit this collar disk belongs to. It is the 104th Military Police Battalion, Fifth Corps stationed at Parsons, West Virginia. This information was found in the Official National Guard Register for 1922, Page 45. Ray42 Posted September 7, 2019 Share #3 Posted September 7, 2019 Thats pretty cool, Ive never been able to find a WV collar disk before. I wouldn't have guessed that it was WVA and not WV.

I know your pain, I can't find North Carolina disks here in NC. The state abbreviations changed to two letters in 1963, although I remember "old style" abbreviations being regularly used into the 80's and later. I believe the US Post Office wanted the change. mortarman Posted September 8, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted September 8, 2019 Organized on Dec 9, 1921. Only Company a was formed. A lack of funding by Congress eliminated the creation of the MP Battalion, however, since "A" Company was already formed, it was allowed to continue. mortarman Posted September 8, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted September 8, 2019 Organized at the beginning of the Coal Wars.
mortarman Posted September 15, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted September 15, 2019 The 104th Military Police Battalion, 5th Corps, WV National Guard appears to have only existed for three years, from 9 December 1921 to about 2 January 1925. On 2 Jan 1925, the company commander, Captain Miller was re-assigned as a reserve officer in the WVNG. The 1926 National Guard Register no longer lists the 104th MP Battalion as part of the 5th Corps.
