I will have to dig out a few...one that stands out is a 1945 dated shovel with the pic added...no definitive proof of when it was added

which leads to the next question.....what is the earliest dated M1951s in circulation?

I believe 1950, I could be wrong and will have to check later tonight when I get home.

The pic added to ww2 shovels is a genuine post war addition but I am not sure what time frame these were added.

I do not know what the H-W stands for, but I do have a 1952 dated shovel made by them. Interestingly, it does not appear that my wood handle has ever been painted. Pics of mine:

I have a m1951 Pioneer dated 1965. It was given to me by my uncle back in the late 1960’s when I was a young boy. He brought it back from Vietnam along with a collection of web gear and two shelter halves. He gave all to me and my younger brother. The shovel then, was unissued, and over the years I put it to good use. Approximately 20 years ago I put a regular shovel handle on it(saved the usgi handle) and it has served as a camp tool tending Boy Scout fires and as a general woodland tool et al, USFS combi tool. The pioneer came with a m1956 cover, but doesn’t fit. I recently purchased the larger updated 6 rivet model, but the carrier still will not fit.

I see pictures of this shovel fitting into these carriers 43, 51, and 56. Mine will not fit in any of them. Any insight or direction on how to find a cover/ carrier that fits would be appreciated. Thanks

photos below demonstrates the lack of fit with pioneer. I’ve also included a picture of the pioneer in it’s current configuration. It gets a lot of attention when ever I pull it out. I plan on putting the original handle back on it, but there is considerable memories and sentiment  that make it hard to put the ole gal back in her original handle. She’s beside a Council combi-tool I modified using a m1967 e-tool spade. The council is a worthy replacement…….sigh. Time to make new memories?
