Brian Keith Posted May 25, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 25, 2019 I originally posted this here: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/264425-harold-olen-whetstone-stalag-xii-a/ but didnt include a scan of the back of the PH. So I will include it here. Was it common for returned POW-'s to receive an engraved PH? Thanks for looking, Comments Welcome! BKW
121eagles Posted May 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 27, 2019 To the best of my knowledge engraved medals were sent to the family. When the POW returned home he would send medals he received to get engraved.
Brian Keith Posted May 27, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted May 27, 2019 Thanks for the comments! I thought it unusual as a non-KIA engraved heart. BKW
KASTAUFFER Posted May 27, 2019 Share #4 Posted May 27, 2019 Quite a few WWII POWs received engraved medals after they returned home. There was a form they could fill out when they were being separated from the service to claim medals they had not received. The Purple Heart was often claimed. Since they had already been discharged, a named medal was issued by the PQMD. I have quite a few of these with documentation. Kurt
kanemono Posted May 28, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 28, 2019 Here is a group of engraved medals to George Steffen Jr. with his POW "Stalag VI G" tag. Steffen was wounded and captured in the fierce fighting in the Hurtgen Forrest on November 7, 1944 where the 112th Regiment suffered horrendous casualties. The Company D Morning Report dated November 11, 1944 reported that the Company lost 3 Officers and 67 Enlisted Men on November 8, 1944 listing Steffen. He was sent to Stalag VIH 19196 and Stalag VIG 13196. He was a POW from November 8, 1944 to April 2, 1945
