BEAST Posted May 24, 2019 Share #4 Posted May 24, 2019 With the letters having serifs, would that make it 1870s or is later as in the 1890s? I'm using relicman.com to learn about the back markings on buttons and I'm just as confused as ever. Many decades ago, I bought Albert's book on buttons and still can't figure out manufacturers dates.
dag Posted May 24, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 24, 2019 ... Albert's book on buttons ... Agree post Civil War. This button dates to the 1890's. I got that from some of the button reference books on backmarks/manufacturers. Albert's book is GREAT, but can only get you close with the type/style of button. There are too many manufacturer variations on a common post-Civil War button like this one. This style was used post Civil War thru the change in US Army button to the Great Seal button in 1902. IDing the backmark gets you the rest of the way. See some of the button book references I have listed in a separate thread I wrote on buttons, link in my signature line.
