Could not find anything similar in the 1915 to present CG uniform info that I have..

 

Canadian Navy or Royal Navy perhaps ??

Never seen anything like it, but merchants would not have guns.

I'm pretty sure I have seen USMS Gunner's Mate rates, but don't have one myself. I thought there was a thread on the site with a complete collection of USMS rates, but can't find it.

. And, the more I think about it, they did carry lots of ammunition. Someone would have to insure it was safe and stowed properly on the merchant ships. I forgot, that even in the Navy, a Gunnersmates main job is maintaining the ammunition and magazines.

 

Still an odd looking device though. Didnt the USMS we are rating badges, similar in style to USN ( but in red)? I dont know, it was never really something I payed close attention too. In the past 20-25 years, Ive focused only on family things, CS,EM,SM and CT (have 4 CTs in the family! So Spooky)!
