Phfly1010 Posted May 17, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 17, 2019 Did World War II fighter pilots (not usaaf after ww2) wear the winterized A6A boots with the leather straps, wool lined and zippered boots or were these boots primarily worn by bomber crew members? 38Driver Posted May 18, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 18, 2019 Yes fighter pilots wore A-6s. You can see them in numerous images. Remember that A-6As were very late. There were A-6 modified with straps. I can’t say I’ve seen images of modified A-6s on fighter pilots however, just A-6s
P-59A Posted May 18, 2019 Share #3 Posted May 18, 2019 A-6A flying boots were not authorized until around Aug 7 1945. They are considered post war as it is not likely they made it into over seas service until after the war ended. The A-6 flying flying boot with modifications in the way of straps and buckles as seen on the A-6A or without modifications are what was worn in WW2. In as far as who wore the A-6 depends on what missions one was flying. Heavy bomber crews flying at high altitude wore them as well as pilots of the fighters that flew cover for them. Any one flying high altitude missions wore the heated flight suits and related gear. The P-51D and P-47's had the plugs for heated flight suits. Period photo's in the ETO also show high altitude pilots also wore the British pilot boots on high altitude missions. Low altitude missions like those flown in the Pacific by the USAAF typically did not hit the freezing weather seen by those in the ETO and they tend to be seen in the low quarter boots.
