Trying to identify the ribbon that I have highlighted in the picture. The closest I have come up with is 2nd Nicaraguan Campaign but to me that still doesn't look right. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea who the Skipper is, but the Ribbon may be French WWI Commemorative Medal.

The second medal is what I am talking about.

The one in the picture is 4 darker colored stripes and 5 lighter. The commemorative medal is 5 red, 6 white.

Any idea who the submarine skipper is?

Sadly no. This came in a photo album I recently purchased that has a lot of family pictures and some more of the man on the right when he came home. I am in the process of looking at the back of each photo in the album to see if there are any clues to the family's identity.

The second row is all US campaign ribbons and the first one looks like a PH. It would not be a foreign ribbon sandwiched between them. Has to be a US of some sort, pre WW2.

some more of the man on the right

Can you post additional photos of him? Maybe we can track him down.

Looks like it could be a Bronze Star. A little white on each side and it looks like a difference in color at the center (the white/blue stripes).

It has to be 2nd Nicaraguan. There are several submarine COs that had that award. Some better photos showing his face could help narrow it down... hard to tell from the side profile.

Thank you all for your help! I thought my idea of 2nd Nicaraguan was far fetched but you have confirmed my hunch. As for a head on shot of him hopefully this might do and on another photograph he is referred to as "Harry"

I initially thought this but I dont believe so. The 2NCM has too many stripes for this to be there. Maybe we can enhance the image.

Top Row: PH or LOM w/ star, ?

Bottom Row: American Defense w/ Star, American Campaign, Asian- Pacific Campaign Medal

I believe the unknown ribbon is the 2nd Nicaraguan Campaign.

Found Him! Looks like my mystery man is Harry Benjamin Dodge USNA class of '30. This is picture of him in the 50's when he was captain of the USS Pollux. Thank you Skysoldier80 for that list of possibilities. It was a great help and thank you to everyone else for your information and opinions!

Here are some of his assignments:

USS S-10 - 1935

Commanding officer USS R-12 (SS-89) - 1940

He was the CO of the USS Brill in WWII.

That is great news. I figured that with all of us, we would figure it out. If you find out anything else about his awards, I am definitely now curious.

1930 Lucky Bag

If you search "Dodge" it will come up with a couple of photos of him at the USNA - https://archive.org/details/luckybag1930unse/page/232

HARRY BENJAMIN DODGE

"Harry"
Portland, Maine
HARRY hails from the stern and rock-
bound coast of Maine, long noted for
its seafaring men. Since the day he
nonchalantly entered Number 2 Gate nothing
has been known to disturb his peace of mind
or to rumple his good nature.
Acclimating himself at once to the swing
of Naval Academy life and early acquiring
a host of friends, Harry "broke" well out in
front and his position has never been chal-
lenged. Without being noted for his per-
severance and tenacity in "boning," he has
been consistently at the top of the class aca-
demically. Early recognized as one of the in-
tellectuals he has oft been consulted on tech-
nical affairs and the greatest of respect was
accorded his decisions.
Aside from his scholarly accomplishments
Harry has many others which recommend him
for an ideal shipmate. He has always added
fuel to the flames in our undertakings and
has shown unmistakable genius in our battles
with the Executive Department. While not
in the category of snakes, Harry has never
failed to demonstrate genuine interest in the
fairer sex. Although none have doubted his
ability to keep things well under control,
those of us who know him well predict that
one day his efforts will be attended with last-
ing success.

Just curious, what is the badge below his ribbons in the original photo? Is that for service on some other type of boat or ship?
