Rifleman Posted May 6, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 6, 2019 I was looking at some Civil War photographs this afternoon online and ran across this photo of Michigan troops.Under the photo is written that this is C 1861.I think it's a lot later. One soldier is wearing a U S buckle but the uniforms don't look correct. Also the rifles are not anything I've seen from that time period. Can anyone ID these rifles? oldfireguy Posted May 6, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 6, 2019 I believe those are 50/70 Remington Rolling Blocks. If you search under US Army rolling blocks you will see plenty of examples. https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Remington_Rolling_Block_rifle
Rifleman Posted May 6, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted May 6, 2019 Possible, but the trigger guard looks too big and looks like a lever to me.
Rifleman Posted May 6, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted May 6, 2019 Someone on Gunboards has ID'd it.It's a Sharps Borchardt M1878 in 45/70.In this video on youtube it's mentioned that the Michigan militia bought some of these.About 22,000 made. sundance Posted May 6, 2019 Share #5 Posted May 6, 2019 What time period would that put this photo in?
yp221 Posted May 6, 2019 Share #6 Posted May 6, 2019 I'd say 1870s or 1880s. The term M.S.T. (Michigan State Troops?) was used during that period and there was a Michigan governor named Crosswell during that period. The camp was probably named in his honor. illinigander Posted May 8, 2019 Share #7 Posted May 8, 2019 Michigan State troops were issued Peabody rifles at one time and I think that is what you are looking at. Illinigander
Big Al Posted May 10, 2019 Share #8 Posted May 10, 2019 It's definitely not a Peabody rifle. The profile of the receiver and the style of lever are totally different. The Peabody also has an external hammer. https://bid.sellwithhunt.com/view-auctions/catalog/id/6965/lot/853127/American-Peabody-Single-Shot-Breech-Loading-Rifle-45-70-Caliber
