skypilot6670 Posted April 30, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 30, 2019 Recently purchased a Navy civil war I.D. Disc. In searching the sailors records I found on his wifes pension application his duty description is Captain of the hold and later Master at Arms. I assume the captain description means he was in charge of the hold , but searching Wiki and google I cant find a definitive job description. Iam hoping someone on the forum can explain just what his job was as Captain of the hold. Thanks Mike
JBFloyd Posted May 1, 2019 Share #2 Posted May 1, 2019 The captain of the hold, a petty officer rate, was responsible for the stowage of items in the hold so that they would be secure and could be recovered in a timely manner. On a warship, this would generally mean provisions for the crew. He would also oversee others working in the hold.
