The Rooster Posted April 29, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 29, 2019 A seller of antiques who asked the question, "Tanker Helmet ?" Looks to be in real good condition. And all original ?

The Rooster Posted April 29, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted April 29, 2019 Does anyone know where a cover for this can be found? And about what they go for? Thank you.
Ronald Posted April 29, 2019 Share #5 Posted April 29, 2019 It is not a "Tanker" helmet but rather an aircrew helmet. Those "flap" attachments were there to fit over the headset. What cover are you talking about? As far as I know these did not use a cover.
wildcat123 Posted April 29, 2019 Share #6 Posted April 29, 2019 There is a later model that had a canvas cover, is that what youre thinking about?

What cover are you talking about? As far as I know these did not use a cover. Yea.... I knew what it was when I saw it. The seller did not. Good price. It was not listed with the other flak helmets on epay... It was listed under old us army helmet. Canvas cover like this Looks to be different than the one I posted? Maybe mine is not made to have a cover? Different chin strap arrangement and doesnt look like there is anyway to remove cover? Like it was made sewn in place? The Rooster Posted April 29, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted April 29, 2019 Mine looks like an M3 ? No cover....
Bugme Posted April 29, 2019 Share #10 Posted April 29, 2019 While this is indeed a flak helmet, the dealer was not completely wrong calling it a tanker helmet. Flak helmets were utilized by tankers during the Korean War. There is no cloth cover for this helmet.

sundance Posted April 30, 2019 Share #12 Posted April 30, 2019 Are prices similar for flak helmets and tanker helmets if the condition is comparable?
The Rooster Posted April 30, 2019 Author Share #13 Posted April 30, 2019 Okay nowI got it. The M3 being the first model, looking similar to the M1 with a brim on the front. The M4 having the canvas cover and the M5 which is what I have here. Last model. I gather these are common? I read they made 200,000 M3's Anyone have a guess at the numbers of M5's produced? ken88 Posted April 30, 2019 Share #14 Posted April 30, 2019 Nearly 100.000 according to one source. Here's an example of the M-3 I have in my collection for comparison..

5thwingmarty Posted April 30, 2019 Share #18 Posted April 30, 2019 M#s had the felt ear pads, M5s did not. I think the M4A2 cloth and the other leather covered helmets actually had multiple pieces of steel making up the helmets, kind of like the flak vests. They were not just steel pots covered by fabric or leather.
The Rooster Posted April 30, 2019 Author Share #19 Posted April 30, 2019 I just noticed something strange about the helmet in this post. All of the M5's I'm seeing come straight down in the front with no brim what so ever. Compare this M5 I got off of the web, with my helmet. Why would mine have a slight brim to it. Its a smaller brim than the M3 but it definately has a brim. Is mine an M4 ???? Sure does not look like the M5! What gives ???? ? Maybe an M4.... prior to the M4A2 ??? or an M4A ? A1 ? strange????? The Rooster Posted April 30, 2019 Author Share #21 Posted April 30, 2019 I think the second photo is of the back of an M5?.....mike I think you are right.. I think the #1 first head on shot is of the back also..... Il see if I can find any more pics... Okay.... Mystery solved... The seller did not include any pictures of the front head on.... Must have thought that the back was the front ? lol So its got to be a regular M5... Sorry for my confussion. Looks like they plopped it down backwards and that was it. Nothing from the front. lol I hope the front is not roached! lol
