Its a gas flap that was incorporated into earlier shirts. That's a field shirt to be worn with the wool field trousers. That's a great haul! Looks like you did well. Scott

Nice haul and nice ID'ed hat, but of he was a S/Sgt the hat should have had an EM disk instead of the officer eagle (which looks postwar) that being said, might be worth the research to see if he stayed in and was promoted.

Wow. Great research. So I should replace the eagle with an enlisted disc since he never did survive to become an officer. Thanks for looking that up.

If it were mine I would leave as is (it is what it is). When aircrew didnt return from missions their serviceable uniforms/gear was often pooled and re-issued to new members. The cap could have come back worn by anther member of the same squadron who lived near where the auction was...

Just a hunch but do you think this hat belonged to an officer who was in a crew or friends with this Sargent and wrote his info into his own hat for some reason. Maybe post war letters to the family or sending belongings back to the family?

Thank you to all that have served our country and to your families that have sacrificed without your presence at home. Thank you to all that have given their lives for my freedom and to their families that suffer. May God bless you!
