Quick tip, anything with "Army Air Forces" on it can safely be dated to 1941-1947 as it was the "Army Air Corps" until 1941 and the "United States Air Force" starting in 1947.

The Army Air Forces was the organization within the Army, but all personnel were assigned to the Army Air Corps. I have posted the complete explanation on the this forum twice over the years. It was a weird set-up for sure and most folks don't understand it cause it is complicated and no other branch has anything like this. It pretty much came about as during the late pre-war period, steps were being taken to seperate the Air Force from the Army but the war postponed it.

Thanks for additional information. It's like trying to explain that Marines in WW2 were part of the Marine Corps, under the Navy Department, but don't call them sailors.

Generally, anything labeled 'AAF' is WW2 was my blanket statement, the bell curve of references to the "Army Air Forces" peaks during WW2 with it tapering off drastically prior to 1940 or after 1947.
