Confirmed Civil War campaign medal

Recommended Posts

A fortunate find at this last weekends TMCA show in Franklin, TN. The medal is confirmed to Captain (ret) James R. Mullikin, medal No. 7 issued on 5 April 1909. Interestingly Mullikin is sandwiched between general officers on the roll.

Mullikin is easily traceable on Ancestry with much information from Army registers, census report, etc... Mullikin was born in New Brunswick, NJ on 1 November 1836. His military service began with the rank of captain in the 35th Indiana Volunteers, Dec 61-Nov 62. He then enlisted in 124th Indiana Volunteers, Oct 63-Mar 64. He was commissioned into the 25th US Colored Infantry, Mar 64, transferring to 97th US Colored Infantry in Dec 65. Honorably mustered out April 66.

Mullikin was commissioned into the 4th Infantry Regiment, May 66, with promotion to 1LT July 66. He served with the 4th Infantry on the Western Frontier including Montana. He medically retired from the Army 15 Dec 1870.

Along with the Civil War campaign medal Mullikin was awarded the Indian Wars medal No. 1323 and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) membership medal No. 5530. The search begins!

Mullikin was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and as of the 1915 census was 79 years old living in NJ.

The US Mint produced 600 No. prefixed medals. On 12 August 1913 the ribbon was changed from the red, white , blue to a blue & gray ribbon. Of the 600 medals No. 1-No. 307 and No. 309-No. 501 have the red, white , blue ribbon.

I am lucky to have found this medal before a couple other guys!
