1943 7th NCB Bamboo Mailing Tube

Recommended Posts

Estate sale find. I have never had one in hand before. Approx. 10.5 inches long. Inside, it had a 1936 high school diploma (person unknown) from Gustine, Texas and a 1950 vacation bible school certificate (possibly to a son) from the Second Avenue Baptist Church in Dallas. The postal cancellation is incomplete due to a missing stamp, but clearly shows 1943 and NAVY. What baffles me is what was his rating?. PO 3/c, but what rating? Enjoy.

WOW!! Thank you so much aznation. That clarifies the documents found inside the tube--his wife's HS diploma and his son's vacation bible school certificate.

Longbranch--I thought that EM was for Electrician Mate. I see possibly an E in the first letter, but the second letter looks more like a P.

Thanks to both of you for your responses.

Yeah, got to look at the pics better on my computer. Definitely looks like "SP 3/c". Possibly had a specialist rating (the ones with the letter inside the diamond).

Here's some basic info about WW2 USN specialist rates: http://uniform-reference.net/insignia/usn/usn_ww2_enl_specialist.html

Since you know his full name, you could search Ancestry's muster rolls (might not show up there, as some NCB units only pop up while aboard a transport ship taking the unit somewhere). However, I'm sure you could easily order his file if you absolutely needed to know more about his service and rating.

You're welcome hirsca. That certainly does explain the documents you found inside the tube.

Yes, indeed, thanks to you. I did not see in the info you sent of a date of death for him. Wife yes, him, no.

Any thoughts? I doubt he could still be alive. He was born in 1912.

Again, many thanks.

I can't imagine that he's still alive but I did not find anything regarding his death. That said, I found nothing on Find-A-Grave for either Bernice Dehart or EM Francis Dehart.

Also, I believe his naval rate was SF3c, which is Shipfitter 3rd class.

Interesting. I'll be on the lookout for him in his Dixie cup and bell bottoms.

SF3/c. Yup, the more I look at his return address, the more I'm thinking you have scored again!

Many thanks,

Al

Took me awhile to find this but I found where E M and Bernice are buried. Didn't figure to also spell his name De Hart with a space in between. But here you go. Evidently he died the same year as she did.

7th Naval Construction Battalion - Naval History and Heritage Command

Note: From what I can see of the postal cancellation stamp on the tube it shows what I think is 1943 but I don't see a month. Maybe you can look better and see if there's a month on there to determine the exact date he mailed that. Then you might want to compare the date to the 7th NCB history in the link provided to see where the 7th was on that date. Just a thought.

The tube is missing one stamp that most likely had the month and day in the cancellation. But it has a 1943 date above the word NAVY.

Found this: https://www.history.navy.mil/content/history/museums/seabee/explore/wwii-cruisebooks/cruisebooks-ncb.html

Scroll down to the 7th MCB cruise book. Briefly put, they spent the majority of time in the Pacific theater on Espiritu Santo from mid 1942 to December 1943 arriving San Francisco 13 Dec 43 after a 16 month deployment.

Thanks again for all of your help.
