manayunkman Posted April 10, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 10, 2019 I'm trying to put a group back together and need to know the time period of this patch. It's embroidered on twill and only has VFMA-323 on the bottom. I couldn't find this particular variation anywhere on line. Thank you for looking. TBMflyer Posted April 11, 2019 Share #3 Posted April 11, 2019 The squadron was re-designated as VMFA-323 in July of 1964-not sure the exact date of the patch but it has to be from after that date. Mark

manayunkman Posted April 11, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted April 11, 2019 I'm a little confused. I read that the squadron was designated a USMC Attack Squadron in 1952 and came back from serving in Korea in 1953.
ocsfollowme Posted April 11, 2019 Share #6 Posted April 11, 2019 I see the same designation on Wikipedia. My question is if it was renamed vmfa in 64 would that be an American made patch?
manayunkman Posted April 11, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted April 11, 2019 It must be early 60s before they starting using "Death Rattlers" on the patch. It looks to me like it was made overseas Phillipines?
TBMflyer Posted April 11, 2019 Share #8 Posted April 11, 2019 The Korean war designation of Attack would be VMA, this is what they were from '52-56. The VMFA or Fighter-Attack designation was used when they flew the F-4's, so this patch is definitely from post-'64 usage. Mark
manayunkman Posted April 11, 2019 Author Share #9 Posted April 11, 2019 My amature mistake Mark. Thanks for clearing it up.
manayunkman Posted April 11, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted April 11, 2019 I wonder when "Death Rattlers" was incorporated into the patch?
manayunkman Posted April 12, 2019 Author Share #11 Posted April 12, 2019 This Marine retired in 1965 after 6 years. This might be a very early and rare version of this patch? Interesting how uneven the embroidery is.
manayunkman Posted April 15, 2019 Author Share #12 Posted April 15, 2019 Part of our team found these during an estate clean out. We put a lot of effort in trying to find things and not throw them away.
