P-40N Fuel Gage

Fuel gage for Curtiss P-40N fuselage tank was overhauled by Warner Robins Air Material Activity in 1947. P-40 was redesignated F-40 in 1948 so there may have been some still in inventory but I wonder if they were primarily supporting foreign operators.

Your paper tag has a 44 date with an over haul stamp of 47. This was most likely in inventory until that time. It looks like new old stock, never used.

The military tags have a date of issue for the tag not the part. When a change is made to the tag, the date allows identification of superceded tags which need to be discarded.

Regarding the "overhaul", it is possible that new old stock instruments were simply functional tested postwar and put back into inventory.

Wouldn't the DWG- tag (not shown) be the contract number and date made? The instrument parts and other small parts I have or have seen have these metal tags riveted to them. As for the paper tag, that is an over haul tag, not an inventory or inspection tag (normally an ink stamp on the box or part for small items like this). Those tags or ink stamps clearly state what they are. It may be the gage failed inspection and was over hauled.

you are correct the 44 date is the date of the form not the part

from wiki

The P-40 was used by over two dozen countries during and after the war. The P-40 was used by Brazil, Egypt, Finland and Turkey. The last P-40s in military service, used by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), were retired in 1954.

The US could have sold off the surplus inventory to private owners and foreign operators

Wonder if the PN crossed to other aircraft

I would suspect that the basic DJ-11 instrument was built in different versions for different aircraft. Engines, propellers and instruments were normally Government Furnished Equipment. Since the fuel gage is peculiar to a P-40N, it may have been furnished by Curtiss instead of being GFE. There are no markings on it to indicate government procurement. I recall that in the 1980's, new C-130's were being fitted with GFE vertical speed indicators that were overhauled WWII instruments.
