How did the War Department then the DOD notify the next of kin?

Are there any regulations, circulars, directives?

Any articles or books?

Not sure about regulations, etc but would like to add I have my WIA father's Western Union telegram from the government notifying his mother. He was shot up April 11th 1945. The text said " he was slightly wounded", however a very closer look reveals the word "slightly" was pasted over the word " severely". The telegram is dated the 19th. The wounds were by German MG, through the stomach, groin, thumb, left and rt lower legs. He credits the rounds being AP for saving his life...10 pencil sized diameter scars, plus a bunch of ricochet scars, does not sound " slightly " wounded. He returned to the States by hospital ship four months later.
