Salvage Sailor Posted January 17, 2023 Author #101 Posted January 17, 2023 A 'Fancy' photograph for the folks back home, 4th US Cavalry, Schofield Barracks, T.H.
Salvage Sailor Posted January 19, 2023 Author #102 Posted January 19, 2023 Throughout this topic I've mentioned several times that the Infantry & Cavalry were living in tents, or 'under canvas', while their temporary cantonment and eventual permanent barracks were being constructed. 'Under Canvas' The tenting area was laid out by Companies (or Troops), with wooden rails resembling a horse corral lining the 'streets'. The upper canvas rain covers would be lashed to the fence rails and the tents erected upon a plank floor, two troopers per tent (and one cat in this instance) with a QMC iron bed, mattress, wooden foot locker. blankets, etc. These fellas also set up a table with tablecloth & some books to read.

Guest oldshafter Posted November 16, 2023 #109 Posted November 16, 2023 Has anyone familiar with Hawaii around 1913-1916 ever seen an eagle statue like this? The photo is from a collection my great grandfather amassed at Fort Shafter during that period. Another of the eagle. Soldiers from 2nd Infantry, Co. C.
Salvage Sailor Posted December 3, 2023 Author #110 Posted December 3, 2023 Tremendous photographs, still have not found a trace of the 'Eagle' around Fort Shafter or on Oahu.

Guest oldshafter Posted December 6, 2023 #112 Posted December 6, 2023 Great photo of the men with beers. In that moment, life could be worse. Continuing the recreation theme, here's one of a baseball team. Probably 2nd Infantry based on the original owner's affiliation. He pitched for C company, this is B.
Guest oldshafter Posted December 6, 2023 #113 Posted December 6, 2023 This is 2nd Infantry, Company C. My Great-Grandfather, Charles W. Ammerman first-row, left, holding the ball. I even found a couple write-ups in old Honolulu newspapers mentioning this team. According to those he was a pretty good pitcher! Circa 1914-1916. Probably the same vegetation-covered building in the background as the previous photo.
Salvage Sailor Posted January 20, 2024 Author #114 Posted January 20, 2024 Fabulous Pineapple Army baseball photos, I have many 2nd Infantry photos from this time period. I'll have to scan through them and see if I have anything related to your GGF's service period at Fort Shafter, T.H. PS - the buildings with the vines on them still exist on Palm Circle, Fort Shafter. Hawaii War College Staff, 1917 first year of establishment

ScottG Posted October 10, 2025 #120 Posted October 10, 2025 Those are some fantastic images and especially the ambulance wagons. We are currently restoring a 1909 version and these pictures are a great reference for how the litters and other accessories were mounted, as well as the markings. Thank you for sharing and for putting up a great topic for us to enjoy. My Grandfather was stationed in Hawaii as part of the 34th Infantry Regiment in 1940-41 before being sent to attempt to relieve the Philippines, and ending up in Australia. Scott
