Bearmon Posted February 11, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 11, 2019 Leaning towards a crusier possible Salt Lake City I can't think of any gun referred to as 25. Any thoughts are welcome.
RustyCanteen Posted February 11, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 11, 2019 Sort of reminds me of a 1950s-1960s USN ASW weapon, MK 108?
Salvage Sailor Posted February 11, 2019 Share #3 Posted February 11, 2019 One possibility There is a 5"/25 caliber AA gun used on many ships and many subs that would fit the period of this patch (looks like 1950's to 1960's) 5"/25 caliber gun http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_5-25_mk10.php
RustyCanteen Posted February 11, 2019 Share #4 Posted February 11, 2019 Yeah I thought of that too with the "25" reference, but I think it's one of these launchers: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WeaponAlfa.jpg
Bearmon Posted February 11, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted February 11, 2019 TYhanks all, I didn't think of 5"/25's, the link from Rusty sure looks like the gun on the patch.
Salvage Sailor Posted February 11, 2019 Share #6 Posted February 11, 2019 TYhanks all, I didn't think of 5"/25's, the link from Rusty sure looks like the gun on the patch. I'd say the RUR-4 Weapon Alpha is a match. It had a distinctive exhaust flame from the rocket which was vented skyward as seen in the photo and also on the patch. As for the "25"? Mount 25? (reverse of 52, the standard mount number) DLG-25 USS BAINBRIDGE never had the Alpha mount, she was equipped with the ASROC RUR-5 launcher when commissioned. There is no USN hull number for DDG-25 (This was built as HMAS PERTH for the Australian navy) One possibility is the USS CARPENTER which was one of the few ships with the RUR-4 Alpha mount, but her hull number is DD-825 Very unique patch Bearmon, and a keeper too.
