Siamundo Posted February 9, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 9, 2019 Going through some stuff trying to organize, and thought I would share this set that I picked up several years ago from another collector who was downsizing. Very simply explained, and if I have my lineage facts straight, the 87th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was active from 1952 until 1955 when it was re-designated as the 512th FIS. The 512th was later inactivated in 1959. There was a second incarnation of the 87th FIS activated in 1956 which was active until 1985. The lower left patch has had the original 87th FIS tab cut off and is though to be from the transitional period between the two designations. I belive the 512 is German made. Randy Posted February 10, 2019 Share #4 Posted February 10, 2019 Here's the transition patch with a tab they had made. I guess they were stuck with a bunch of extra 87 FIS patches that warranted making the tabs. The 512 managed to get the 87 FIS design approved after they moved from Soesterberg AB in the Netherlands to RAF Bentwaters in the UK. The previous 512 FDS design was modified from the WW 2 one with the P-47 replaced with an F-86. The attached 512 FIS is US made, the 512 FDS is UK made. Siamundo Posted February 10, 2019 Author Share #5 Posted February 10, 2019 Hi Randy, thanks for the additional information. Now I'll have to keep my eyes open for a 512 tab. That 512th FDS is a great looking patch.
Randy Posted February 10, 2019 Share #6 Posted February 10, 2019 Couple more, just for kicks. They did these when they won the Hughes Trophy in 1957 as best FIS in the USAF. The larger one is multi piece felt construction, the other is hat patch sized. Both German made. Randy
