kkevin2004 Posted February 2, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2019 There was an individual with this name killed in January 1945. Usually I see late war engravings done by machine, but this one obviously by hand. Were they still hand engraving Army KIA PHs this late into the war? tarbridge Posted February 2, 2019 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2019 I do believe you still see this style in that time frame. It would not concern me.
Teamski Posted February 2, 2019 Share #3 Posted February 2, 2019 Absolutely! Engraving was used right up to the end of the war. -Ski
Kadet Posted February 2, 2019 Share #4 Posted February 2, 2019 Often PHs from this era are small machine engraved, but they were also hand engraved. I believe machine engraving was used to expand production capacity as casualty rates increased the need for engraved medals. I have no way to prove it...but I also think that some of the machine engraving may have been out sourced to private firms under a government contract, especially the large machine engraved examples. Teamski Posted February 2, 2019 Share #6 Posted February 2, 2019 I even had a hand engraved Korean War PH at one point. This was most likely because the soldier's name was really long. -Ski

vicjoy1945 Posted February 7, 2019 Share #8 Posted February 7, 2019 I recognize the "hand" for this engraving having seen it many times. I think Kurt and Frank laid out an approximate overlapping time period for hand vs small machine vs large machine engraving in their OMSA Purple Heart article going way, way back when....guess I'm dating myself. Hand engraving was used throughout WWII.
