same soldier turns his head revealing shape with a corner on left side of helmet. My guess is a square, but maybe something like the 1st ID SSI.

Pretty sure these are all First Cav troopers. They used them extensively in Jan - March 1966 during Operation Masher/White Wing

would this patch help determine the unit?

i was thinking this might possibly be a Vietnamese soldier though due to the Carbine and M45 pack but i'm not sure.

I wish I knew what the patch was, but I do not.

That is definitely a South Vietnamese soldier

This was a unit tac marking used by the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry during what has been said Operation Masher/White Wing period of 1966. The shapes are based off the same used by all aviation units within the 1st Cav... Triangle = A Co., Square = B Co., Circle = C Co., Diamond = D Co.

The interior numbers are squad/platoon numbers within each and the "M" standing for Medic.

Thanks for the info pump 150. I had a feeling it has something to do with the helicopter markings. Could an admin please change the name to Vietnam War 2nd Bn 7th Cav tac marks.

25 Jan 66. Start of Operation Masher. By Ssgt Lyle Boggess.

soldier far right has an A Co Triangle on helmet. I belive his helmet cover is improvised from burlap, several soldiers in 2nd Bn can be seen with burlap covers.

That appears.to be a South Korean patch in that photo. Forget which Division though.
