Great Colorized photo WW2 Merchant Marine & female Brit?

Took friends out picking today and came across this great photo!!

 

It is a COOL colorized photo that has a female Commonwealth officer and a US Merchant Marine LT.

 

Female: I see 2 pips, so 1st LT? There is a "letter" pin at the bottom of her eppaulete, but I can't make it out. There is a "sun" badge on her right lapel. With the type of hat, is she an AUSSIE?

 

Am I on the right track with him being Merchant Marine? Definitely not Navy, and I don't think Coasty.

 

On the back are instructions for the colorization.
