MasonK Posted February 2, 2019 Author #126 Posted February 2, 2019 It will damage the helmet Anton is not a professional Messing with fragile paint in any way will alter it Moderation of this thread has been selective Let it go Or not Owen Im not sure what fragile paint would be damaged other than potentially the original liner and shell paint? Even so, resting crosses in the preexisting holes for purpose of a stationary display likely wouldnt do any harm, in my opinion. No more damage than if he displayed it without the crosses. That aside, I think very few on here can say they are actual professionals when it comes to the handling and display of antiquities/artifacts. In my opinion, only those who have studied these items academically, and work in a museum like environment, could really classify themselves as a professional. By your definition, the majority of the forum shouldnt be handling most, if any of the items in their collection.
kammo-man Posted February 4, 2019 #128 Posted February 4, 2019 So don't mess with things........ Leave them as they are. owen
Bugme Posted February 4, 2019 #129 Posted February 4, 2019 So don't mess with things........ Leave them as they are. owen Point made. Time to move on.
anton67 Posted March 2, 2019 #130 Posted March 2, 2019 UPDATE: I was able to get my hands on two Chaplain's Crosses. I added them to the helmet and liner in a NON-DETERMINANT manor. The liner had two holes and the cross pins fit perfectly through the holes. It can be removed with no damage at any time. As for the steel pot, there were two holes punched into the front. The bottom hole was however filled. So I bought a cross with a bent lower pin. I then bent the pin completely flat to the back of the cross. I then placed the top pin through the top hole and placed the retaining pin on the back. This cross can also be removed at any time with no damage to the helmet. It basically hangs on the front of the helmet loosely but displays nicely. First photo is the cross with the bent back pin.
anton67 Posted March 2, 2019 #134 Posted March 2, 2019 I also downloaded his service records from Geoff last night. Havent had a chance to go through them yet however.
USMC-RECON0321 Posted March 2, 2019 #137 Posted March 2, 2019 Mark, Looks great and I would've probably done the same thing for display purposes, I would probably just remove that lower pin on the shell cross and work a slight bend / curve into the cross to make it more of a form fit to the shell. (Yes it's Mark's cross and he can do what he wants with it)!
644td Posted March 2, 2019 #138 Posted March 2, 2019 Mark, She looks good and can be reversed with no problems. Great job!!! Marty
MasonK Posted March 2, 2019 Author #139 Posted March 2, 2019 It looks complete now, Mark! Amazing helmet all around!
anton67 Posted March 3, 2019 #140 Posted March 3, 2019 Thank you for the kind comments. I think it displays better with the cross. And as was mentioned it can be reversed with out altering the helmet in any manor.
anton67 Posted June 25, 2024 #141 Posted June 25, 2024 Just bumping this one up for members who haven't seen it. Still have the helmet. It is one of my best helmets in my collection.
anton67 Posted February 25 #144 Posted February 25 I went back and read this old thread from the first post. Very interesting how it developed. Also I am still happy that I added the crosses (which are removable). The helmet displays much nicer. Thanks again to all that gave me their input back than.
anton67 Posted February 25 #145 Posted February 25 Decided to display helmet and liner separately. Added crosses to both (again removable).
