Edelweisse Posted January 21, 2019 #1 Posted January 21, 2019 Hi Folks: I recently picked up two (2) US Army chaplains sashes. These are black with the US Army eagle and the cross embroidered in gold yellow celluloid. When I saw them....I was very impressed with them when I saw them. These are the first ones Ive seen. I will post pictures soon. I would appreciate any comments
atb Posted January 21, 2019 #3 Posted January 21, 2019 That type of ecclesiastical item is called a "stole."
Chap15 Posted January 21, 2019 #5 Posted January 21, 2019 Technically, they were called "chaplain's scarf". However "stole" is appropriate too. Recently a number of repro stoles hit the market. The difference is the material. Repro's have a satin finish and the material is not as durable.
Bob Hudson Posted January 21, 2019 #6 Posted January 21, 2019 Repro's have a satin finish and the material is not as durable. Here's a close-up of the real thing showing the ribbed "grosgrain" fabric. This is from a thread at http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/55319-chaplains-stole-scarf/
Edelweisse Posted January 21, 2019 Author #7 Posted January 21, 2019 Hi: Thanks for the postings.....these came from an estate sale of a military (US Army LTC) chaplain so I have no fear of them being copies etc....and here are the pictures ...similar to those posted...
Edelweisse Posted January 21, 2019 Author #8 Posted January 21, 2019 Here are close-ups of the embroidery
Brian Dentino Posted January 21, 2019 #11 Posted January 21, 2019 Nice find! Love Chaplin items, just don't have any in my collection but love looking at items associated with this distinguished branch of our Armed Services!
Edelweisse Posted January 22, 2019 Author #12 Posted January 22, 2019 Thank you for the info about the correct name which is a “stole” . When I saw them in the estate sale I felt compelled “to save them” when in reality....I have been saved...thru Jesus Christ. I was just led to purchase them...I also liked the embroidery. Thank you again for all of the info.
BlackLion Posted March 2, 2019 #13 Posted March 2, 2019 An example of the current style US Army Chaplain Stole. The stole is "double" sided; black on on side and white on the other. This example is available for use by Christian Chaplains (both Protestant and Catholic). The nomenclature on the DLA tag reads, "5501-1; Stole Traditional - USA Armed Forces Chaplain; 3730; Qty: 1.00 each; Bin 123"

Edelweisse Posted March 20, 2023 Author #16 Posted March 20, 2023 Unless it's for all chaplains regardless denomination/belief. Who knows...if that's why....I can only say "WOW!"...
