VenitHora Posted January 3, 2019 #1 Posted January 3, 2019 Here is a nice Corpsman helmet I thought I would share. It has medic crosses on the helmet and liner with the rate. I am still researching this one. I hope you enjoy it.
VenitHora Posted January 3, 2019 Author #2 Posted January 3, 2019 The back of the helmet with red crosses.
Government Issue Posted January 3, 2019 #5 Posted January 3, 2019 Very nice! It'll be interesting to see what you can find out.
VenitHora Posted January 3, 2019 Author #6 Posted January 3, 2019 Here is a close up of the age cracking found on the helmet. The light white spots are reflection from the light. From the research I have done so far, I found the veteran was part of the 6th Marine Division at Okinawa and the 3rd Amphibious Corps in Northern China. I heard he was also at Iwo Jima but I have not been able to confirm this yet.
644td Posted January 3, 2019 #7 Posted January 3, 2019 More pictures are the key to this thread and for more responses to be given. The one close up is useless for someone to give a fair assessment of this helmet. Does this helmet have promise, maybe. I did find your website informative. Marty
Bill47 Posted January 4, 2019 #8 Posted January 4, 2019 VenitHora, any ID or provenance? Thanks. Bill
USMC-RECON0321 Posted January 4, 2019 #9 Posted January 4, 2019 Well from first look and that good old "Gut Feeling" my vote is good from what I see so far. I like it. Look forward to further information. Troy
Burning Hazard Posted January 4, 2019 #10 Posted January 4, 2019 I don't see any red flags either, looks good. I'm liking the micro-cracking on the white paint tool haven't seen a fake/forgery that replicated micro cracking like that. Pat
VenitHora Posted January 4, 2019 Author #11 Posted January 4, 2019 Troy and Pat,Thanks for the good words.Bill,I have the vet's name and it is also partly visible on the helmet. As I posted before I found the veteran was with the 6th Marine Division and 3rd Ampbibious Corps but have not been able to find out which exact unit he was with yet.
stealthytyler Posted January 4, 2019 #12 Posted January 4, 2019 Did you try Ancestry to look up the muster rolls? It will usually give you a good idea as to what unit he would be in if he was a corpsman attached to the Marines.
jeeplover Posted April 6, 2023 #13 Posted April 6, 2023 Is this the helmet that would be worn in the field. I have a really nice well worn USMC fatigue with a corpsman stencil on the sleeve and I was just kind of wondering what helmet would go to it would this be a correct helmet

jeeplover Posted April 7, 2023 #16 Posted April 7, 2023 I was just more curious as to what kind of helmet would go with the fatigue I have. I've seen where they say this is a proper helmet I've seen where they say it would be a Marine corps helmet and I also seen I think it's grunt gear shows a gray helmet with the corpsman stencil on the front. I'm just curious what would be the proper helmet. Thank you for the advice though.
dmar836 Posted April 7, 2023 #17 Posted April 7, 2023 I would do some book and photo research. Context to time and place is key. Having a seller say something is "correct" doesn't mean a whole lot IMO.
jeeplover Posted April 7, 2023 #18 Posted April 7, 2023 I've never really talked to anyone who's interested in selling one of them I've only talked to people who claim that what they have is a Marine corps corpsman's helmet. I have looked online I have also tried to look at old video and that is why I said it just seems like there is no concrete thing to say this is what you need. So I thought maybe the people who have been collecting this a little bit longer than I have would know. I do understand time period matters too because I pretty sure there was an order to cover the cross because it was being used as a Target by enemies combatants. I have looked in grunt gear like I said.. I'm not just trying to be some lazy person that's not doing the research I have been doing that but there's very limited.
dmar836 Posted April 8, 2023 #19 Posted April 8, 2023 Indeed. Proceed cautiously. There are many experienced in this here on the forum. Most M-1s you will find in the wild are fakes. Patience and success in this hobby cannot be understated. Once you begin looking for a "certain thing" you will become a target by fakers - at least in the realm of medic and airborne M-1s. Even those who have been collecting for decades are always learning. Best Dave
jeeplover Posted April 8, 2023 #20 Posted April 8, 2023 Thank you very much for your kind words and I always try to do my research before I buy anything. I know some people who will not sell to me because if I can't post it or research it first I don't buy it . I mean I have had people in person telling me I can't take pictures because they're afraid that if I post it and people don't like it then they try to sell it people are going to see the post and it's going to damage their sell. to me that is fine because if they are not sure what they have they shouldn't be selling it anyway. I will continue to try to look at pictures and do more research. thank you very much and I hope you have a nice Easter.
