Sub badge/pin needs identification help

Can anyone identify this Sub pin, it is the small one (Sweetheart i think) but what with the attached Donkey?

Disrespective slang for sailor was “ goat head”.

the mascot at the US Naval Academy is a goat. West Point has a mule. You will find goats representing the navy just as you will find mules representing the army even outside of the military academies.

 

I assume that the sub badge has been modified as a sweetheart piece for a girl who was dating a midshipman who was expecting to enter the submarine service.

I would say ww2 era, I agree definitely looks like a sweetheart piece to me. Well made and the first one I've seen like it.
