Ivydiv Posted December 10, 2018 Share #1 Posted December 10, 2018 Hope this is the right place for this. Was there an Oval for the 187th Parachute Glider Infantry? I have the 187th PGI patch along with the 11th AB patch, but I am wondering if they ever had an Oval for their glider wings? Hope someone can answer this question. Thanks in advance. Allan H. Posted December 11, 2018 Share #8 Posted December 11, 2018 Great Japanese made pieces! The Swing cap is a stunner! The thing about background trimmings on WWII era 11th Airborne units is that they were not nearly as regimented as what we find in the ETO. The ovals shown in Manayunkman's posts are simply gilt bullion ovals, which you will find being worn by soldiers in other units like the 188th PIR. Remember, General Swing wanted all of his combat troops to be both parachute and glider qualified, so he ordered the 187th and the 188th to flip airborne designations from parachute to glider. So that all of the soldiers in those units suddenly needed to have the other qualification in order to be assigned to the units. I have a 188th uniform with the exact same black oval with gold bullion border but with a parachute in the center. Allan
manayunkman Posted December 11, 2018 Share #9 Posted December 11, 2018 Thanks Allan. Interesting information on the ovals. Love it. The Ike jacket is all custom as well. The glider wing and ribbon bar are not original to the jacket. The group is also ID'd with names in the Swing cap and Ike.
manayunkman Posted December 11, 2018 Share #10 Posted December 11, 2018 Allan, Is there any evidence of who wore it first? And any evidence of another oval that was interchanged between the two regiments? And what other unit wore this oval? Thanks Peter
Ivydiv Posted December 12, 2018 Author Share #11 Posted December 12, 2018 Wow. Great uniform. Thanks for all of the information and great photos. Dave
camopara Posted December 12, 2018 Share #12 Posted December 12, 2018 These three came from a 511th Signal group. I will agree with Allan, in that these are more of a 'generic' oval as I have seen them in 511th and 187th groups.
camopara Posted December 12, 2018 Share #13 Posted December 12, 2018 This type of oval can also be found in red.
manayunkman Posted December 13, 2018 Share #14 Posted December 13, 2018 Thanks camopara. Is the 187th known to have used any other oval? Very intriguing information. There was a spare 187th patch in the inside pocket of the Ike jacket.
