thecandyman0838 Posted December 6, 2018 Share #1 Posted December 6, 2018 Hello, I'm thinking of purchasing this case m3 trench knife and was wondering if it is an original ww2 era knife. I believe case made reproductions awhile ago and I know that m3s are faked quite a bit. Does this knife appear to be original ww2 era? MattS Posted December 7, 2018 Share #6 Posted December 7, 2018 Early M8 scabbard, they have probably been together for a long time.

thecandyman0838 Posted December 14, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted December 14, 2018 Thank you to everyone for the information. The knife came yesterday and is in my favorite condition, well used but not abused. The pictures make the handle look darker. The pommel looks real crude. Is this common on case produced m3s? Also there is no ordnance stamp on the pommel? Is this normal on a case m3?
byf41 Posted December 14, 2018 Share #9 Posted December 14, 2018 Not unusual for a Case M3 to not be ordinance proofed . It seems to me that Case proofed maybe every second or third knife as there are lots of examples out there w/o It , don't know the exact numbers . Yours Is Interesting In that It has the seldom seen "flat" 3 and C . Usually these letters/numbers have a noticeable curve to them . Heres a picture for comparison . The "flat C" knife Is In the middle .
sactroop Posted December 14, 2018 Share #10 Posted December 14, 2018 The pommel and tang look typical of what you'd expect to see on the end of a Case M3. Some just look like the end of the tang was peened with several hammer strikes. Some the end of the tang looks like they were struck with a tool that domes the face of the tang. Some like yours have the strike marks on the pommel either side of the tang. I don't think I've seen a "star burst" type staking on the end of a Case M3 tang yet. SKIPH Posted December 14, 2018 Share #11 Posted December 14, 2018 The pommel is correct for a CASE M3. The ordinance stamp as I recall is slightly smaller on the CASE M3s, and some stamps were weak, and difficult to see. Just for fun, take a #2 pencil and rub it across the pommel, you may see the stamp. The graphite will rub off when you're done. SKIP
