WWII Collapsible Shovel?

This is a recent garage sale pickup. I have never seen one before but it is well made and fits in a standard US shovel carrier. As you can see it is a three piece collapsible tool and was very heavily rusted when I got it. This is after about 20 hours of cleaning. There is a makers mark but I can't quite make it out yet. Anyone ever seen one of these before?

Cheers

I can read AMES who's a notorious manufacturer for US entrenching tool. Anyway this doesn't look a military marking nor a military tool. Maybe camping or hicking.

Maybe this is from the WWI period?

A couple of years back I was reading Gary Mead's "The Doughboys" and there was a passage where an officer mentions buying his own uniforms and gear. One item that stood out was a folding shovel which I found interesting. Perhaps the shovel on this post is similar to that purchased by the officer.
