Pineapple Army DUI of the Interwar Hawaiian Division 1922-1941

Aloha Everyone,

For many years I've been collecting groups, ephemera and items pertaining to the Interwar Hawaiian Division 1922-1941. This topic illustrates the Distinctive Unit Insignia, crests and SSI patches of the Hawaiian Division and Hawaiian Department from their formation in 1922 until their disbandment on October 1st, 1941. There were some Cavalry, Infantry and Engineer units in the Hawaiian Department prior to the formation of the Division (1908-1920), but they were reassigned to the US mainland and the Philippines after World War I (except the 3rd 'Beaver' Engineers who were continuously building the posts and fortifications on Oahu).

The primary assets used to form the Hawaiian Division, the 21st & 22nd Infantry Brigades and the 11th Artillery Brigade, came from the WWI era 11th "Liberty" Infantry Division, thus the many '11th' numbered units on their Order of Battle. The Hawaiian Division was the only 'Full' division in the US Army during the interwar years. It was organized as a square division with two infantry brigades each having two infantry regiments and supporting engineer, artillery, armor, aviation, chemical, medical, quartermaster & ordnance units. There was also a large coast artillery harbor defense and AA presence on the islands organized under the Hawaiian (Separate) Coast Artillery Brigade.

Unless they are specifically attributed, all photos and items I am displaying are from my Pineapple Army archive (you may have seen some of them 'borrowed' on the web, but the originals are in my collection)

Here's an overview of the Hawaiian Division organization from 1921 up to October 1941 (it's not complete and any oversights or mistakes are mine, so feel free to add corrections)

Hawaiian 'Taro' Division No-So SSI

From member kiaiokalewa on another USMF topic

".....soldiers up at Schofield started wearing the the Hawaiian Division patches as early as 1923. Capt. Charles Welsh, 11th Sig. Co., Hawaiian Division, up at Schofield Barracks had patented his "Quick Removable Devices for Insignia" in 1924 but had applied for the patent in 1923. This is those metal back patches that you find on the Hawaiian Department, Hawaiian Division, Hawaiian National Guard and the Hawaiian Separate Coast Artillery Brigade (HSCAB) SSI's. The Hawaiian Department SSI was indorsed by the WD on November 2, 1921 however the Hawaiian Division fell under its command along with Hawaiian Coast Artillery District later redesignated HSCAB. Both did have their own insignia but for about 15 years HSCAB did use the insignia of the Hawaiian Department....." *

*Note: As illustrated in the photo of the 64th Coast Artillery redleg wearing the Hawaiian Department SSI in the first post of this topic and the 64th CAC signalers in the second post.

This is great! I have been looking for a pin back set of the 3rd engineer insignia to restore a uniform. Do you have a photo of the collar disks they used? I know a 3/Engineer BOS disk exists as a gilt waffleback 1920s type, but I am not sure they would not have worn a US/3 and Engineer BOS disk instead.

Thanks for the photos the 3rd engineers! It looks like they are wearing US/3 and a plain Engineer BOS disk. So that answers my question I think; do you have any photos of them wearing the M1926 coat? This one had pin back insignia on it; thankfully someone only took the metal insignia off. Now to find pinback DUI's.

Excellent! Thanks! The engineer was there within a couple of years of that picture, so that is probably exactly how it looked. It does seem to have a plan engineer BOS disk without the unit number from what I can see. Next time I have it out I will get a photo; I just need to find the correct pinback DUI's (sad thing is that it looks like they were present for years, until someone took them off) and collar disks. It came with the original no-sew patch still on it thankfully.

Of note here is the 11th Photo Section attached to the 75th. They were the primary photographic unit for the Hawaiian Department and Division. You'll see them credited on many US Army photos taken in the Department throughout the 1920's and 1930's.

Also, did you notice all of the super shiny Air Service collar brass in these photos? Many of them may be the 4 piece Oroid (artificial gold) collar brass made by Hilborn-Hamburger as shown in this topic http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/319943-1930s-oroid-air-corps-4-piece-winged-prop-disc/

Just a few weeks later this shiny new B-17 will be a pile of scrap and the 18th Bombardment Wing would be wiped out.

A small collection of 13th FAR DI's and Collar devices. The shield DI is from the 1920's period.

Do you have photos of Company B 13 FAR dated 1925 - 1928 as my grandfather was assigned to that unit. He was running from the "LAW" and enlisted under an assumed name of Fred R. McLoud. The Army suited him well as he enlisted under his real name (Ralph A. Lurvey) in 1929 and retired in 1959 as a CWO and promoted to Capt on the retired list.

Thanks, Mason

P.S. always looking for period 13th FAR material!
