What is this M1 Carbine tool ?

Can anyone identify the tool in the photo?

It is shorter than a standard M1 Carbine gas piston removal tool,

and it has a groove and a hole at one end.

Thanks,

Douglas

douglas,

Is the tool marked in any way? I looked through 7 different Carbine books, and one gun tool book, and I did not see this variation documented. I see a couple of piston wrench articles listed in the Carbine Club Newsletter index, but they are earlier newsletters than what I have on-hand.

Douglas,

Here's my guess.

The oddball end is to disassemble the gas piston for a non military M1 carbine. Can't remember the make, perhaps Plainfield or Universal.

Jim,

I believe you nailed it! I just confirmed that Howa Carbines had two notches on the gas piston nut, instead of the normal three. It's possible that other commercial Carbine manufacturers did the same, since it would ease in manufacture.

For those who do not know Jim, he is a wealth of firearm knowledge in the Thompson community, and is also especially knowledgeable on Carbines, BAR's, and early semi-auto centerfire rifles such as the Remington Model 8, and the Winchester 1907 series of rifles. He is also a Vietnam vet, and an all-around good guy!

Great job on the ID!
