Hydrographic Survey Ship - NAVOCEANO

USS PURSUIT (AGS-17) Converted Auk class minesweeper. Recommissioned 15 February 1950, Pursuit left Texas and proceeded off Labrador and Greenland as part of Hydrographic Survey Group 2. For the next three years she spent the winter survey season operating in the Caribbean, and the summer months in the northern latitudes off Labrador and Greenland. Reclassified AGS–17, 15 August 1951, Pursuit continued that employment schedule until mid-1954 when she set course for İskenderun, Turkey, 6 October, returning to Norfolk, Virginia, 23 March 1955. On 15 July she was underway for a survey and resupply mission along the Arctic "DEW Line". Having sounded previously uncharted waters both above and below the Arctic Circle, she returned to the east coast, at New York, 10 October.

During 1956, 1957, and 1958 Pursuit again conducted hydrographic and oceanographic surveys off the coast of Turkey. On her return she resumed surveys in the Caribbean. Reassigned to the Pacific in 1960, Pursuit departed New York on 15 February for Pearl Harbor, arriving 14 April. She operated in Hawaiian waters until May when she sailed for Long Beach, California. Mooring there 9 May, she began inactivation and decommissioned 30 June 1960. Her name was struck from the Navy List on 1 July 1960.

Oceanographic Survey Ship - NAVOCEANO

USS SHELDRAKE (AGS-19) Converted Auk class minesweeper. Sheldrake recommissioned at San Diego, California, on 14 April 1952 and sailed to New York City for conversion to an oceanographic survey ship. Over the next 16 years, she plied the waters of the western Atlantic and the Caribbean, from Newfoundland to Cuba, conducting over 25 separate surveys. On three occasions, Sheldrake left her normal area of operations to conduct surveys. Two of these cruises were to the Mediterranean, February to April 1958 and November 1965 to March 1966. The third departure from normal Atlantic Ocean operations came in July 1966 when she changed homeports, from New York City to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Departing Bayonne, New Jersey, on 7 July, she laid over at Norfolk, Virginia, until 12 July; then got underway with Towhee for the Panama Canal. They transited the canal on the 19th, visited Mazatlán, Mexico, on the 29th, and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 12 August. After almost three months in Hawaii, Sheldrake deployed to the western Pacific on 9 November. For almost a year and one-half, she, Tanner and Towhee surveyed in the western Pacific, in the Philippines, and along the Southeast Asian coast. On 9 April, she returned to Pearl Harbor. She remained in Hawaii until struck from the Navy List on 30 June 1968 and decommissioned on 1 August.

Gumby was created by Art Clokey in the early 1950s after he finished film school at the University of Southern California (USC). Gumby's famous slanted head was based on the hairstyle of Clokey's father, Charles Farrington, in an old photograph. In 1955 and 1956, 25 eleven-minute episodes aired on NBC. In 1959, The Gumby Show entered syndication, and more episodes were produced in the 1960s.
