Vintage 1st Tactical Airlift Training Squadron

Recommended Posts

I have been looking online trying to piece together some information about this patch and/or squadron but have not had any luck. It appears to be an older vintage Japanese made patch-maybe Vietnam era. I do really like this design though. Not sure what their mission was but the wasp is holding a machine gun and what might be a flashlight. Maybe they trained for night assaults or air drops? The machine gun reminds me of a Lewis gun or maybe a Bren with the drum on top.

The squadron started out as the 1st Combat Crew Training Squadron in 1968 and renamed to the 1st Tactical Airlift Training Squadron in 1970. The 1st Tactical Airlift Training Squadron was attached to the 302nd Special Operations Wing (1970 to 1971) then 302nd Tactical Airlift Wing (1971 to 1973). The squadron provided training in the C-119 Flying Boxcar for AC-119 Stinger. I Think all the training was out of Ohio?

Hi Mark, thank you for the information. Based on the design, that makes sense they were involved with Special Operations training.

Very cool patch. I like the design, machine gun & flashlight plus the wasp(?) for the AC-119 Stinger (AC-119K)
