stratasfan Posted November 9, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2018 found these pictures and am wondering . . . is this a patch made to commemorate 50 missions? Is it something common or would this have been done by a particular person?
MattS Posted November 9, 2018 Share #2 Posted November 9, 2018 Sure looks like 50 missions in groups of 5.

TBMflyer Posted November 10, 2018 Share #5 Posted November 10, 2018 I've got two of these, exact copies of the one shown above. One came from a pilot with the 301st BG, the other from a gunner with the 483rd. Nice piece, Mark
5thwingmarty Posted November 10, 2018 Share #6 Posted November 10, 2018 These were often done for the early 5th Wing Groups, 2nd, 97th, 99th and 301st Bomb Groups. I have seen them on 99th BG jackets and I believe on jackets from the other groups as well. These groups were part of the 5th Wing in the 12th AF and then the 15th AF. Crewmembers in at least the heavy bomb groups of the 12th AF and early in the history of the 15th AF were required to fly 50 missions/sorties. Beginning in I think early 1944 they started giving double credit for missions to some countries so they tended to end up flying around 35 sorties to complete their required 50 missions. The 8th AF started off requiring 25 missions and then increased it to 35 missions later.
