Vertol Posted November 2, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 2, 2018 Hello, I have this sling (that has seen better days) for BAR, if I'm correct, but I don't know how to tell if the long part is WWI or WWII. The short one is dated 1918, but has been acquired seperately. In addition, should the brass parts be bronzed ? Regards, Vertol
Chris_B Posted November 3, 2018 Share #2 Posted November 3, 2018 WWII era hooks would be parkerized steel. However, Brass hooks do not mean that the sling would not have been used in WWII; it would have simply been "old stock" that was issued in WWII. I have not heard of the brass parts being bronzed; that would seem like an extravagance.
silverplate Posted November 3, 2018 Share #3 Posted November 3, 2018 The M1907 sling had brass hardware up until 1942, when the changeover to parkerized steel occurred. Not all of the slings were dated, making it difficult to verify age. However, if the hardware matches, and is all brass, then the sling would be correct for WWII. Vertol Posted November 4, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted November 4, 2018 Thank you for your answers. I was asking for the bronzing as I have a short end of a M1907 sling (dated 1917) whose hook is bronzed.
